The Institute
An Independent Institute Governed By Multiple Stakeholders
The multi-stakeholder governance of the Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI) is critical to ensure transparency, accountability and ultimately build trust among all interested parties.
From the inception of the Global Tailings Review (GTR), to the development of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and the establishment of the GTMI, every decision has been shaped by diverse stakeholder input.
Today, the GTMI board of directors represents the interests of various industries and communities.
Creation
- The Global Tailings Review (GTR), was co-convened in 2019 by ICMM, UNEP and the PRI, and led by independent chair, Dr Bruno Oberle.
- Each convening party had an equal stake in the decision making and launched the GISTM in 2020.
- In 2021, a multi-stakeholder, independent advisory panel was convened by UNEP and PRI to support and guide the foundation of the GTMI.
Leadership
- The GTMI is a non-profit organisation governed by a multi-stakeholder board.

The Board of Directors is responsible for:
- Defining and reviewing the organisation’s strategy, and tracking performance
- Selecting, managing and supporting the GTMI’s Executive
- Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
- Understanding and managing the organisation’s risk and ensuring compliance
- The board will always strive to make decisions based on a consensus, with voting as a last resort.
HOW DOES THE INSTITUTE OPERATE?
GTMI Memorandum of Incorporation
The Global Tailings Management Institute registered as a company in South Africa in January 2025. A Memorandum of Incorporation, was adopted by the Incorporators of the company and outlines the rules and regulations for how the company operates. It defines its structure, directors and purpose.
